Inspiration
Indonesia is significantly behind in AI education, especially at the elementary level. With the government’s push to integrate coding and AI into school curricula, there is an urgent need for tools that are accessible, relatable, and culturally relevant for Indonesian children to learn despite the challenges of foreign language.
What it does
Kodino teaches children the fundamentals of programming in a fully Indonesian context. The platform doesn’t just translate the language, it immerses users in culturally-rooted narratives, visuals, and local problem-solving, while also introducing them to essential computational thinking and Indonesian heritage.
How we built it
The project combines some tech stack:
- Frontend: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and TypeScript
- Backend: Python (Flask) We also incorporated AI into our project, and all visual assets were generated using ChatGPT-4o. Copilot where used to help with repeating codes. The typography, design layout, and educational flow were fully developed by our team.
Challenges we ran into
We faced intense creative and technical debates, got stuck in late-stage bugs with limited time, and had to deal with a painfully unstable internet connection during critical development hours. Creating a 2-minute video while also having to explain and describe a major point is time-consuming if we count the retakes.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We managed to develop and integrate the AI component just four hours before the submission deadline! Under high pressure but with full functionality and alignment with the project’s educational goals. We use AI to generate relatable questions for the quiz to match the student's level instead of having to insert bulk data, which is unnecessary.
What we learned
We learned to appreciate and respect each other's unique capabilities. Collaboration is not just about task distribution, but about building trust, patience, and resilience as a team. Raka works as Back-end while Alfin works in the Front-end. Devin and Ariel both work on syllabi and also design. On the technical side, we're also learning to code faster under pressure.
What's next for Kodino
Kodino is not just a hackathon project! It’s a long-term educational initiative. We aim to align with the Indonesian government’s digital literacy roadmap and contribute meaningfully to foundational coding education in local schools across the archipelago and islands.
