Inspiration
Our group’s project is aimed at improving productivity, physical health and mental health when working or studying from home. We were inspired by the Pomodoro studying technique and so wanted to base our solution off of that.
What it does
Our website functions as a gamified Pomodoro app, where you study and take breaks for certain amounts of time, and gain Koi fish when completing a Pomodoro cycle successfully. When fully complete, the idea would be to incentivise studying/working for set periods of time, and then taking adequate breaks once this has been achieved. The Koi system adds incentivisation to do this, since you earn a reward for studying/working hard and get to customize your pond however you like. This contributes to improving: (1) physical health since individuals are reminded to take computer breaks, and water breaks, and (2) mental health since individuals have a healthy work/break balance (and get to relax in with their Koi pond). There is a to do list feature on the left where you would be allowed to add tasks and goals to complete. On the right there is a notification feature which reminds you to take breaks, stretch, drink water etc. In addition, it is planned to allow you to connect with your friends by viewing each other's koi pond, introducing a friendly competition to motivate you to complete tasks.
How we built it
We created the main interface of the website using HTML and CSS, creating multiple pages for the user to navigate through. JavaScript was incorporated for the Pomodoro timer that is on the home page.
Challenges we ran into
We struggled with implementing the JavaScript into the website as the team had not learn it before, thus our website does not function as desired.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of being about to develop the main layout of our idea and creating a solid foundation.
What we learned
We learnt the needed front-end and back-end development techniques when creating a website.
What's next for Ko-I
With some more time to learn JavaScript, we would be able to implement a fully functional timer and aim to create notification pop-ups.
