Inspiration

As a Canadian, I know what it means to live in a diverse place. Multiculturalism is highly encouraged in my country and we are very welcoming toward people from all over the world. Living in such a diverse society, however, comes with its own, unique problems! One of which is the fact that cultural misunderstanding becomes a very common occurrence. But... What is cultural misunderstanding? It is a misunderstanding caused between people of different cultures not due to a language barrier, but rather due to cultural ignorance.

What it does

The application is meant to make it easy for everyday users to learn more about their friends, co-workers, or acquaintance who come from a different cultural background than their own.

The plan was to have an initial search bar through which the user can choose the culture they wish to learn about. Then, they shall be prompted to choose a category such as traditions, values, family, greetings, food, arts, tools, etc. The result will be a list of posts (created by users of the application) that discuss this topic. The posts will be ordered based on an upvote-downvote system so that the entire website is run and governed by the people, rather than one person.

Challenges I ran into

Initially, I had three other people on my team, but due to unforeseen circumstances, they all had to leave the event early. At first, I was only focused on the backend, but then I needed to find a way to work on the front end and connect everything together.

What's next for KnowYourCulture

I think this idea has big potential in solving one of the most prominent issues in our societies, which is why I aim to make this application go public very soon!
