Project Title
KNOWLYST
Tagline
Don't just learn it. Know how well you know it.
Project Description
Problem Statement
Learning has become easier than ever, but measuring actual understanding is still difficult.
A student can watch a course, read documentation, or use an AI tutor for hours and still not know whether they genuinely understand the subject. Most traditional quiz platforms rely on fixed question banks, predetermined topics, or simple random questions.
The result is a gap between being familiar with a topic and actually understanding it.
We built KNOWLYST to address that gap.
Solution Overview
KNOWLYST is an AI-powered knowledge assessment platform that lets users test how deeply they understand almost any topic.
Instead of requiring a predefined question bank, KNOWLYST allows the user to enter a subject or specific topic and dynamically generates a personalized assessment using AI.
The experience is designed to progressively challenge the user:
Easy → Intermediate → Hard → Deep Knowledge
The user selects a topic, configures the assessment, answers the generated questions, and receives a final result representing their performance.
The core idea is simple:
Don't just consume information. Challenge what you think you know.
Key Features
🧠 AI-Generated Assessments
KNOWLYST dynamically generates questions based on the user's selected topic instead of depending entirely on a static question bank.
🌎 Test Almost Any Topic
Users can enter a broad subject such as Computer Science or a specific concept such as React Hooks, making the platform flexible across different domains.
📈 Progressive Difficulty
Questions are designed to move from foundational concepts toward increasingly challenging questions, helping create a more meaningful assessment experience.
🎯 Personalized Testing
Each assessment is generated based on what the user wants to test, making the experience more personalized than a traditional fixed quiz.
📊 Performance Results
After completing an assessment, users receive a result that helps them understand how well they performed.
⚡ Simple User Flow
KNOWLYST keeps the experience focused:
Choose Topic → Configure → Test → Discover
The complex AI generation happens behind the scenes while the user gets a straightforward interface.
Technologies Used
Frontend
The frontend is a Vite + React + TypeScript single-page application.
Core technologies:
- React 18
- TypeScript
- Vite
- Tailwind CSS
- Lucide React
- Motion / Framer Motion
- Recharts
Backend
The backend is a Node.js + Express service written in TypeScript.
AI Layer
Google Gemini powers question generation.
The backend:
- Keeps the API key server-side
- Builds structured generation prompts
- Requests structured JSON responses
- Validates generated output
- Retries transient failures
- Surfaces explicit application errors
Development & Deployment
- Git
- GitHub
- Netlify
The project combines a lightweight web stack with generative AI to create an interactive knowledge assessment experience directly in the browser.

Target Users
KNOWLYST is designed for people who want to test and evaluate their understanding, including:
- Students preparing for exams
- Developers learning programming languages, frameworks, and concepts
- Self-learners exploring new subjects
- Interview candidates testing their knowledge before interviews
- Competitive programmers challenging their technical understanding
- Professionals refreshing existing skills
For example, someone learning React could enter "React Hooks" and use KNOWLYST to challenge themselves from basic concepts through more advanced understanding.
Why KNOWLYST?
We didn't want to build another application that simply tells people what to learn next.
We wanted to build something that asks:
"How much do you actually know right now?"
KNOWLYST turns that question into an interactive experience.
By combining user-defined topics, AI-generated assessments, and progressive difficulty, the project explores a different use of generative AI: not just helping people consume knowledge, but helping them challenge and measure it.
Challenges We Faced
Generating Questions Across Different Domains
A system that supports arbitrary topics has to handle very different subjects. Generating useful questions for JavaScript, Physics, History, or another domain requires the AI instructions to be flexible without becoming too vague.
Maintaining Meaningful Difficulty
A major challenge was avoiding a collection of randomly generated questions.
We wanted the assessment to have a deliberate progression from easier concepts toward deeper and more challenging knowledge.
Handling AI-Generated Content
AI output is not completely deterministic, so the application has to account for response structure and reliably turn generated content into a usable assessment experience.
Keeping the Interface Simple
There is significant logic operating behind the scenes, but the user shouldn't have to think about that complexity.
We therefore focused on a simple interaction model:
Select → Generate → Answer → Discover
What We Learned
Building KNOWLYST taught us that adding AI to a project isn't just about connecting an API.
The quality of the final product depends on how the AI is prompted, how its responses are handled, how generated content is validated, and how the user interacts with the result.
We also learned that a good AI product needs strong product design around the model. The AI may generate the questions, but the application has to provide the structure, interaction, state management, and user experience that make those questions useful.
What Makes It Stand Out
Traditional quiz applications generally begin with a predefined collection of questions.
KNOWLYST starts with the user's curiosity.
The user decides what they want to know, and the AI creates the assessment around that choice.
That makes KNOWLYST less of a traditional quiz application and more of an on-demand knowledge testing tool.
Our long-term vision is to expand it with features such as detailed topic analytics, weak-area detection, adaptive testing, personalized study recommendations, historical progress, and AI-generated learning paths.
