Know Your Rights is a web app that offers legal info, sign language, audio narration, and multilingual support—helping everyone understand their rights in any situation.
Inspiration
Many people face legal challenges—such as police stops, workplace harassment, or housing disputes—without understanding their rights. This inspired us to build a tool that makes legal awareness accessible to everyone, regardless of language or ability.
What it does
The app allows users to select real-life legal scenarios, view clear rights in multiple languages, access sign language videos, listen to narrations, toggle light/dark themes, and download summaries as PDFs. It creates an inclusive and peaceful experience with dynamic visuals and accessibility features.
How we built it
We used HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to build the front-end. The app includes background videos, animated buttons, and custom themes. We incorporated sign language assets and audio narration, and ensured accessibility by following WCAG guidelines.
Challenges we ran into
Implementing smooth background transitions and syncing narration with text was tricky. Ensuring accessibility for both visually and hearing-impaired users across devices was also challenging.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating a fully functional, inclusive legal awareness tool that supports multiple languages, formats, and user preferences—while staying user-friendly and visually appealing.
What we learned
We gained experience in building accessible web apps, integrating multimedia content, and designing with empathy for diverse user needs.
What's next for Know Your Rights Web
We plan to integrate AI-powered chat for legal Q&A, expand our library of legal scenarios, support more languages, and collaborate with NGOs and legal professionals for accurate content updates.
