Inspiration
Save Space was inspired by my own experience using AI to explore and process my emotions. I often turned to ChatGPT to talk through dreams, relationship questions, and moments I didn’t fully understand. It helped me find language for what I was feeling. That process of reflection made me realize how powerful it could be to offer something similar to others, especially for Black and Brown individuals who may not always have access to therapy.
What it does
Safe Space is a voice-based AI assistant that helps users reflect on trauma, healing, and everyday stress. People can speak or type freely, and the assistant responds with thoughtful, informed guidance. Each user can access up to five sessions per day, encouraging mindful, consistent self-reflection without emotional overload.
How we built it
We built Safe Space using an AI language model trained to engage in emotionally supportive conversation. Voice-to-text was integrated to allow for a more natural experience. Prompts and responses are shaped by mental health research, books, and trusted wellness content. The design is intentionally simple, calm, and culturally attuned.
Challenges we ran into
We had to make sure Safe Space felt like a tool for support, not a replacement for therapy. Language, tone, and session limits all had to be carefully considered. We also worked to ensure cultural relevance, emotional safety, and clarity during moments when users might be feeling overwhelmed or isolated.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of building something that feels emotionally intelligent and approachable. It is especially meaningful to hear that users have been able to name feelings they had not previously understood or felt comfortable expressing. That kind of small progress is what Safe Space is all about.
What we learned
We learned that people do not always need solutions right away. Sometimes they just need space to be honest, to speak freely, and to hear something thoughtful in return. Building Safe Space showed us that language, care, and boundaries can come together to support meaningful personal reflection.
What's next for Roxy AI
Next, we are expanding the voice capabilities, adding more culturally specific prompts, and building a journaling feature that allows users to track their emotional growth. We are also exploring partnerships with wellness professionals and community organizations to make Safe Space more accessible to those who need it most.
