Our Inspiration
Our team is all young women in our twenties, and we hate to admit that none of us do monthly breast self-examinations, but we all check Instagram every single day. This isn't surprising, because the world’s internet users will spend a cumulative 1.25 billion years online in 2020, with more than one-third of that time spent using social media. So how can we siphon some of that social media time and redirect people's attentions towards breast cancer awareness? Enter Knock. We envision that we would encounter Knock through an Instagram filter, but we also wanted to make sure our solution is accessible to our dear moms, our supportive brothers, and everyone in between. Our moms could find Knock in a Facebook notification, and our brothers on Reddit. Once we have their attention, we use powerful data tools to deliver content that is most relevant to our user. Those on our team would be prompted to make a plan to do monthly breast self-examinations, our moms would be encouraged to get yearly mammograms, and our brothers would be directed towards resources that educate them about breast cancer. Accessibility and universality are the key initiatives that inspire Knock.
What is Knock?
Knock leverages several innovative technologies to deliver breast cancer awareness and education globally. Knock is designed to integrate seamlessly with social media platforms that already reach billions of users on a daily basis, so that our solution can be delivered to people all over the world, regardless of background. We designed a ‘smart’ resource hub for users which provides them perfectly tailored information based on the results of a simple survey. The user is brought to our central hub, Knock, through several social media campaigns, driven by a gamified augmented reality video filter created using Facebook’s open source software, SparkAR. When a user interacts with this filter, they are directed to our survey, and asked a series of questions. Based on their answers we use the GPT-3 API, an extremely powerful natural language model, to formulate a list of customized action steps for the user’s individual breast cancer journey. That journey could be one of prevention, treatment, support of a loved one, education, or more. As well as providing tailored resources, Knock allows the user to donate, set up a health plan, or sync upcoming appointments and reminders to their calendar, leveraging Google’s Calendar API. Saving lives is just a Knock away.
