Inspiration: We both enjoy playing other 2d games like Mario and Hollow Knight and wanted to create a game in that format with some similarities. We also both like the theme of this knight hacks, our first, so we decided to incorporate the poster for it as our background along with the main character being the beloved T.K. mascot!

What it does: Knight Hacks VIII Math Adventure takes the player through a journey of 4 different levels to defeat villainous numbers with the help of math operation power ups like addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication. One operation is scattered around each map to help the player successfully defeat the enemy and advance to the next level.

How we built it: We used the GameMaker Development software to create the game and sprites along with YouTube and Gemini to fill in the gaps of knowledge since neither of us have ever created a 2d game of any kind and are completely unfamiliar with this language type and tool.

Challenges we ran into: This is our first ever hackathon and year at UCF so despite our previous computer knowledge we were still pretty caught off guard by having to navigate brand new languages and development platforms like GameMaker.

Accomplishments that we're proud of: Our implementation of an unlock-able double jump, and similarly, the platforming that can only be completed with the double jump. We were also able to include enemies who would deal damage to you, thereby restarting the room, unless you jumped and fell on them, which would defeat them. Additionally, we were pleased with our front end of the program, such as our hand-drawn T.K. sprite and the various number of enemies we were able to manipulate to fit into our game. We are especially proud because all of this was done with no prior knowledge of making games or using the software.

What we learned: We were able to learn the basics of game-making, including both the front-end and back-end aspects of what makes games possible. One of the hardest concepts we had to tackle was the unlockable dash ability. While we made it possible, we still have a lot to learn in order to clean up the dash ability.

What's next for Knight Hacks VIII Math Adventure: We would like to add some final boss levels against bigger enemies who move and fight back, and include some more power ups like exponents along with new levels with completely reworked designs. We also plan on increasing the accessibility of the game by adding instructions to help the player navigate the game and the different power ups and abilities..
