Klose was inspired the everyday reality of how hard it can be to keep in touch and stay close with people in the midst of our busy lives.

Main Problems

1. Life gets busy.

Without setting intentional reminders, it can be difficult keep track of with your people and remember the last time you got in touch.

2. Traditional calendars don't work.

Remembering birthdays, calling or meeting up, and helping people in your life feel close to you can feel like another overwhelming to-do when mixed with your work and life schedule.

3. There isn't a good solution to keep track of personal details about our people.

Trying to recall the Christmas wishlist that the niece mentioned during a walk in the park or remembering the favorite restaurant you went with your best friend in New York. There should be a good place to put these things!

What it does

Klose is an app that helps you stay "klose" with your loved ones, by allowing you to easily make reminders for when to stay in touch or when to catch up with someone.

Klose keeps track of the details for you so that you don't have to worry about remembering:

  • the last time you checked-in or met up
  • special dates or events with specific people
  • notes or questions to follow-up on with people

How we built it

We built this project using React Native, PHP, and MySQL. As we don't have much experience with React Native, we knew that making this project in such a short amount of time would be a real challenge! So we decided to focus on the core components, and tried to keep the navigation and functionality as simple as possible.

Challenges we ran into

This project involved a lot of challenges. As we are both new to React Native, we had to learn completely new ways of constructing components or interacting with elements on a page. We frequently ran into unexpected challenges from new syntax and had to find completely new solutions to old problems.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're really proud that we have managed to make a functional and useful app, which can provide the foundations for a more sophisticated app in the future. We're also happy that we could create something that works well in such a short amount of time.

What we learned

We learned a lot of new things about React Native, especially the intricacies of making a single button function correctly, or making an element slide in a particular direction. We have also learned that coding when we are very tired can make it much harder to maintain our problem solving skills.

What's next for Klose

Next, we'd like to add user authentication and more functionality, so that we can release it into the wild and help more people stay klose.

The Klose app is best viewed on mobile devices.
