Inspiration
Gift-giving can be stressful, especially when you're unsure what someone actually wants. So we thought: what if finding the perfect gift was as intuitive (and fun) as swiping on a dating app? That idea led to Klaus, a playful and personalised gift discovery platform.
What it does
Klaus is a swiping app where users explore curated gift ideas tailored to each person's preferences.
- Swipe right when you like a gift, left when you dont. eventually you get recommendations based on your swiping pattern.
- Add profiles for friends, partners, or family members, and find gifts based on their added keywords(likes, gender, age).
- Build a wishlist for yourself that others can view.
- Look at reviews and buy with just one click!
- Sync your socials and contacts to find friends on the app and view their wishlist(registry).
- Get reminders for any upcoming occasions, birthdays (from facebook), and shop for occasions based on that
How we built it
We used a React framework to build our frontend. Backend to be implemented with Django. Machine learning using a k-means model.
Challenges we ran into
Initially we were too focused on building our machine learning algorithm, but after talking to a mentor on Day 2, we realised having a strong frontend is much more valuable and we should be focusing on that instead. Some teammates were not as familiar with the frameworks and JavaScript, so there was a bit of a learning curve.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Consistency of aesthetics for every page, pleasing visuals and branding. This was our first hackathon (for all team members), so it was really nice to be able to build an MVP in just 3 days.
What we learned
Became more familiar with the frameworks and the language. Also learned what to prioritise in a project with a limited time frame. Since we're more technical people, we learned more business terms and how to sell a product more(really had fun with the pitch video).
What's next for Klaus (formerly Claus)
Proper Backend implementation, as well as partnering up with target organisation like amazon, eBay,etc.
