Inspiration
We have a friend who has a very unique allergy: kiwis. We thought of them when building this extension, and while naming it too! ;)
What it does
Kiwi lets you input your allergies, dislikes, and dietary preferences, then seamlessly filters out products that contain the unwanted ingredients on grocery store websites. Say goodbye to label reading and hello to stress-free shopping tailored to your lifestyle—all with just a few clicks!
How we built it
We used html, css and JavaScript for the extension front-end.
We used JavaScript to scrape the ingredients from grocery store websites and to handle the rest of our API integrations with OpenAI API and Postimg API.
We hand drew all of the UI elements, including the gifs using Procreate!
Challenges we ran into
Scraping dynamic grocery store websites was quite challenging, as we had to figure out a consistent way to get the ingredients every time. It was also difficult to engineer prompts for OpenAI that delivered consistent results over multiple calls. It was also tough to connect the script that scraped the grocery store website to the scripts that worked with the extension. At faster speeds we also had issues with Walmart flagging us as a robot requiring us to slow down our extension.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very proud to have a finished product that is ready to launch! We were unsure at points if we could connect all the scripts, but the genius struck at 5am.
What we learned
We learned a lot about using APIs, web scraping, integrating multiple scripts together and figuring out version control.
What's next for Kiwi - Food Intolerance Filter
We'd like to expand the number of websites that we are compatible with. In the future, we would also like to integrate for keeping track of nutrition, and macros so that users are able to do everything grocery and health related with the Kiwi extension.
