Inspiration

Kivella began with a simple everyday problem: recipes, groceries, pantry ingredients and meal plans usually live in separate places. A saved recipe is only useful when it can become dinner. Kivella connects those steps in one mobile cooking companion.

What it does

Save and organize recipes, track pantry ingredients, find cooking ideas from what you already have, plan meals, and build shopping lists for what is missing. Chef AI helps with cooking questions and recipe ideas. Barcode, photo and recipe-import tools reduce manual entry. Nutrition logging provides editable estimates, while household features help people coordinate their kitchen.

How I built it

The app uses React and TypeScript with Capacitor for iOS and Android. Supabase provides authentication and backend storage, with TanStack Query coordinating app data. The interface combines Playfair Display and Plus Jakarta Sans, a soft cream-and-green palette, illustrated food icons and an animated chef mascot.

RevenueCat powers the native subscription experience and Pro entitlement checks. Its Capacitor SDK and paywall integration connect premium access to the app, while backend controls enforce AI usage allowances.

Challenges and lessons

The hardest part was making the connections reliable: keeping pantry records distinct from nutrition logs, carrying missing ingredients into shopping, handling mobile keyboards and sheets, and reconciling subscriptions with server-side AI limits. Building for both platforms also meant working through native permissions, store billing and review requirements. I learned to make AI output reviewable and to keep every save destination clear.

What I am proud of

Kivella turns a collection of kitchen tools into a practical sequence: start with ingredients, discover a meal, review the recipe and prepare a shopping list. The visual design makes those daily tasks feel friendly and approachable.

Availability and next steps

Kivella Recipes & Meal Planner is live on Google Play. The iOS app has been submitted to Apple and is awaiting approval. Next steps are to learn from the first public users, improve capture and recipe quality, and refine the path from pantry to a cooked meal.
