Inspiration
A new survey found that the average cat owner “likes” 398 cat-related posts and looks at 725 cat pictures and videos in a year (Swns Digital). Additionally, 81% of cat owners have a go-to meme or GIF that they use to regularly cheer themselves up (Mars Petcare US).
With those statistics in mind, we wanted to create a fun and engaging platform for cat lovers to share pictures of their feline friends with one another and vote for their favorite pictures each week.
What it does
With MEOW, users can upload a picture of their furry companions once a day. Once submitted, users can vote for their favorite cat pics of the day. Daily winners are selected and by the end of the week, an overall winner will be selected and gain a spot in the coveted Pawl of Fame and have their pictures admired and appreciated by all.
How we built it
Working as a team of two Software Engineers and two Product Designers, we worked together to brainstorm and decide on the concept and product functions. With our concept and initial wireframe in place, the Engineers immediately begin on building basic functions while the design team iterated on the user experience and interactions.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into some database bugs that needed to be resolved in order for all users to see submission photos, this issue did not allow us enough time to implement all of the styling in our design.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Working within the time constraints of this project and issues of running on a local port, we are immensely proud of our concept and the ability to build out the key functionalities from our design. Just as important was the collaborative nature of this experience. Our group of four truly came together as a team and we never forgot to implement some of the silliness from our whisker friends into the project.
What we learned
Through working with our team, we got to better understand the scope of work on both the design and developer sides. We were able to effectively level set expectations and feasibility with one another in regard to interface design and technical limitations which helped us gain a better understanding of how to be better collaborators and designer/developers, respectively.
What's next for Kitty Project
Ideally, we'd want to continue building out our MVP to include more features such as filters, submission categories, and even video submissions. Additionally, we'd continually to seek to refine the UI and continue to find more opportunities to make it delightful and engaging for users.
From a business perspective, we also envision users eventually being able to get redeemable rewards from contextually relevant pet companies and sponsors who want to gain more exposure for their brand to our cat lover user base such as Purina, Petco, etc.
