Inspiration
Although smartphone penetration rates in the country are at over 70 % and steadily increasing, for most Kenyans the data costs of mobile applications are unsustainable in informal settlement areas due to a low average income received among residents. This income is often inconsistent for a majority of residents within these areas due to some of the informal jobs some of the people in informal settlements do. Teachers in informal settlements areas don't have a lot of disposable income, and so we wanted to create a sustainable application that can help alleviate the process for a teacher to either start or complete their teaching certification.
What it does
Registration of teachers Enrollment of teachers Securing loans and checking balances Provision of learning materials
How I built it
With the Africa is talking sand box we were able to develop and simulate KITI using PHP. We then pushed our our code to github.
Challenges I ran into
Coming up with a sustainable revenue model that would be suitable for the informal settlement areas while keeping costs low for the teachers.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
We were able to identify clear problem statements and adress them in our application.
What I learned
We realized that the teachers in informal settlements face various problems which need to be addressed
What's next for Kiti
We plan to identify an informal settlement area and upon a successful pilot we wish to deploy countrywide
