Inspiration

APIs power much of the modern internet, but monetizing them is still far more complicated than it should be. Developers often have to build authentication systems, payment gateways, subscriptions, and usage tracking before they can charge for their work. With the emergence of the x402 protocol, we saw an opportunity to make API monetization as simple as sharing a URL. We wanted to bring that experience to the Hedera ecosystem by combining x402 with fast, low-cost HBAR and USDC payments.

What it does

Kite402 is a no-code x402 payment gateway for Hedera. Users paste any API or URL, set a price, and instantly receive a protected endpoint. Unpaid requests receive an HTTP 402 Payment Required challenge, while paid requests are securely proxied to the original resource. Every successful payment is logged to Hedera Consensus Service for an immutable, publicly verifiable audit trail, and creators can manage endpoints, view analytics, and withdraw earnings from a simple dashboard.

How we built it

The frontend was built with Next.js 16, Tailwind CSS, and Privy for authentication and embedded Hedera wallets. The payment gateway is powered by Hono, @x402/core, and @x402/hedera, while Neon Postgres and Drizzle ORM handle data persistence. We encrypted upstream URLs using AES-256-GCM, issued signed JWT payment receipts for replay protection, integrated Hedera Mirror Nodes for live transaction history, and used Hedera Consensus Service to create an immutable audit log of every settlement. The Hono gateway is embedded inside the Next.js application, allowing the entire platform to deploy as a single Vercel project.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was adapting x402 to the Hedera ecosystem while maintaining a seamless developer experience. Building a secure withdrawal flow without ever exposing user keys required a two-step signing process. We also had to redesign parts of the architecture for serverless deployments, ensuring prepared withdrawals persisted across different instances. Finally, balancing security, encryption, and performance while keeping the product simple enough for non-technical creators required several iterations.

What we learned

This project gave us a deeper understanding of the x402 protocol, Hedera payments, embedded wallets, serverless architecture, and secure cryptographic design. We also learned that combining open payment standards with blockchain infrastructure can dramatically simplify how APIs and digital services are monetized.

What's next for Kite402

We plan to add recurring billing, usage-based pricing, API usage analytics, SDKs for multiple programming languages, one-click integrations with popular API platforms, and support for additional Hedera-based assets. Our vision is to make Kite402 the easiest way for developers, creators, and AI agents to monetize any web resource with decentralized, programmable payments.
