Inspiration

Living in a small city apartment, I craved fresh, home-grown herbs but struggled to navigate gardening in limited space. I saw friends face the same frustration – urban dwellers wanting to grow food but lacking tailored guidance for balconies/windowsills. That spark led me to build a tool that makes small-space gardening accessible to total beginners.

What it does

KitchenGarden Planner is a mobile-first app that matches users with plants suited to their space (balcony, windowsill, countertop), provides monthly planting timelines, automated care reminders, pest/disease solutions, and recipe ideas for harvested produce – all designed for Northern Hemisphere growing seasons.

How we built it

I started by mapping core user needs (space-specific recommendations, simple care guidance) and designing a mobile-friendly UI with Sage Green/Terracotta tones for readability. Using React Native and Expo, I built the core interface, integrated plant care APIs for reminder logic, and curated a symptom library for pest diagnostics. Firebase handled temporary task logs, and SQLite stored plant/recipe data.

Challenges we ran into

Calibrating care reminder logic to balance simplicity (for beginners) with accuracy was tough – overcomplicating frequency rules risked overwhelming users. Also, designing a pest diagnostic gallery that was visual, jargon-free, and easy to navigate required iterative testing with non-gardening users.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Creating a seamless space-selection flow that instantly serves relevant plant recommendations, and building a reminder system that feels helpful (not intrusive). Most rewarding: testing with urban beginners who said the app made them confident to start growing their own herbs.

What we learned

I deepened my understanding of mobile UX for niche tools – prioritizing clarity over complexity is key for beginner-focused apps. I also learned to translate gardening expertise into accessible, non-technical language, and how to adapt seasonal planting data for Northern Hemisphere users.

What's next for this project

Expand to include Southern Hemisphere growing calendars, add real-time weather integration to adjust care reminders, and build a lightweight community feature for users to share harvest tips. I also plan to integrate a simple seed/supply resource hub for easy access to beginner-friendly products.
