Inspiration

Given the hackathon's theme of environmentalism, we decided to do research on the topic and learned that nearly 1.3 billion tons of food waste is thrown out every year. We realized that we could reduce this staggering amount of food that is thrown away each year if we simply increased awareness of the amount of food that a household buy and uses in a given moment.

What it does

Our project is a web app that could increase awareness of the amount of food and their expiry dates that a household would have at any given time so that they would be less likely to waste food. It can track expiry dates of recorded food items and send notifications to users indicating that the food item should be consumed before it goes bad.

How we built it

We used JavaScript along with CSS and HTML to create the web app.

Challenges we ran into

  1. Creating a drag and drop system
  2. Figuring out how to delete and add a food list for each kitchen part

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  1. We were able to finish a project in such a short amount of time
  2. We were able visualize our app and it turned out pretty close to what we were imagining

What we learned

  1. We managed to learn more about how JavaScript works and it's potential uses in web development.
  2. We learnt how to rapidly prototype and develop a program in the span of approximately 24 hours.
  3. By considering our team's strengths, we learned how to divide work based on our current skillsets which helped development up.

What's next for Kitchen Organizer

  1. A database system to save a user's kitchen model and food storage
  2. A notification system that warns user if a certain food item is close to expiry date
  3. Connect all family members so everyone can edit and see what is in the kitchen
  4. Make the app 3d so that you can visualize the kitchen better and see more precisely where the food is stored
