Inspiration

How many times, have you gone in the kitchen just to find out that you don't quite know what to cook? Well now there is a better way!

What it does

Imagine your own AI-enabled kitchen helper, recommending recipes to cook for your favorite food, helping you with detailed instructions along the way.

Kitchen Buddy allows you to do just that and more. You can ask for recipe options for something that you want to cook – and Kitchen Buddy will gladly recommend you the top 5 recipes for that particular item.

When you select a particular recipe, Kitchen Buddy will go through the entire list of ingredients and cooking instructions (as found online for that recipe) one-by-one, which can be paused or resumed as per the user’s convenience.

Since it’s connected to the Internet through your Alexa-enabled device, you now have every recipe from around the world at your disposal. :)

How we built it

We used the following technologies:

• AWS Lambda
• Alexa Developer Kit
• NodeJS
• Houndify

Challenges we ran into

Mapping all of user's intents and creating corresponding unique methods / slot types was tricky.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

• Getting end to end functionality working.
• Having Kitchen buddy retrieve instruction on thousands of recipes and recommend options. For instance, when you ask it to find a recipe for pasta, it can extract over 1500 unique pasta recipes.

What's next for Kitchen Buddy

• Adding more intelligence for other unique scenarios like querying expiration date of ingredients, placing order online for what you need and recommending meals based on your diet plan.
