Inspiration
The inspiration for Kisan Mitra came from a very personal place. My grandfather and many villagers in my hometown have always struggled with the lack of reliable agricultural information. For example:
• They don’t know the real mandi prices of crops like wheat or sugarcane. Middlemen often take advantage of this, buying at unfair rates and leaving farmers at a heavy loss.
• When it comes to fertilizers, they are often confused about which type or quality to use. Sometimes they end up using harmful or ineffective ones, which reduces yield.
• Pest and disease management is another huge challenge. Without timely knowledge, a small pest attack can destroy entire fields.
• Despite several government schemes for farmer welfare, most villagers never benefit because they simply don’t know what exists or how to apply.
• Even for basic agricultural FAQs, such as crop rotation, water usage, or soil preparation, they have no accessible and trustworthy source of answers.
Witnessing these struggles first-hand, especially the losses my grandfather faced, made me realize how urgent it is to build a system that empowers farmers with knowledge and technology. This is what inspired our team to create Kisan Mitra.
What it does
Kisan Mitra is an AI-powered assistant designed to support farmers by providing:
• Real-time mandi (market) prices for crops like wheat, sugarcane, and more, ensuring farmers get fair value.
• Personalized guidance on fertilizer types, usage, and quality for optimal crop yield.
• Early pest and disease alerts, along with effective management strategies.
• Information on government schemes, eligibility, and step-by-step application guidance.
• Instant answers to agricultural FAQs such as crop rotation, water management, and soil preparation.
How we built it
• **User Research**: Conducted interviews and surveys among farmers to understand their pain points.
• **Data Integration**: Aggregated real-time data from government sources, agricultural research institutes, and local markets.
• **MERN Stack Website**: The website is fully developed and live, offering a user-friendly platform for farmers to access information and resources.
• **AI Chatbot**: Our AI chatbot is up and running, providing conversational support and personalized answers to farmers' questions.
• **Telegram Bot**: The Telegram bot is functional, allowing farmers to get real-time updates and advice directly through their preferred messaging app.
• **Community Feedback**: Continuously gathered feedback from farmers to improve and adapt the solution to their needs.
Challenges we ran into
• **Data Reliability**: Ensuring real-time, accurate market and weather data was a major hurdle.
• **Language Barriers**: Building robust language support for diverse dialects across India.
• **Digital Literacy**: Designing an interface simple enough for first-time smartphone users.
