AeroShield AI – Intelligent Cybersecurity for Safer Aviation

Inspiration

Modern airports depend on digital systems for operations, communications, and data management. Cybersecurity threats and network disruptions can affect the reliability and security of these systems. I was inspired to create AeroShield AI, a cybersecurity project concept that aims to improve aviation security through intelligent threat detection, data protection, and resilient communications. My vision is to use accessible technology to support safer, more reliable, and more secure aviation systems.

What it does

AeroShield AI is designed to demonstrate cybersecurity protection for simulated airport networks. Its planned features include detecting suspicious network activity, identifying potential security risks, protecting sensitive data, monitoring communication availability, and displaying security alerts. Other proposed features include explainable AI recommendations, incident logging, controlled user access, and simulated backup communication during network disruptions.

How we built it

The project is based on cybersecurity, software development, and AI-assisted monitoring. The planned system uses Python for backend processing, Flask for the web application, HTML and CSS for the dashboard, and SQLite for storing incident records. Security features may include authentication, role-based access, and cryptographic methods for protecting data. A simulated network environment will be used to demonstrate suspicious activity detection, security alerts, and backup communication status without connecting to real airport or aircraft systems.

Challenges we ran into

One of the main challenges is designing a system that can identify suspicious activity while minimizing false alerts. Integrating threat monitoring, data protection, incident logging, and communication-status monitoring into one dashboard also requires careful planning and testing. Another challenge is making security alerts understandable and ensuring that AI-generated recommendations remain transparent and subject to human review.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to develop AeroShield AI as a cybersecurity-focused solution for aviation challenges. The project brings together ideas from AI-assisted threat detection, data protection, communication resilience, and security monitoring. We are especially motivated by the possibility of demonstrating practical cybersecurity concepts that could eventually support airports, airlines, and other organizations that depend on reliable digital infrastructure.

What we learned

Through AeroShield AI, we are learning about cybersecurity fundamentals, Python programming, web application development, anomaly detection, data protection, network resilience, and responsible AI. We are also learning that building a useful security solution requires careful testing, clear explanations, secure design, and continuous improvement.

What's next for AeroShield AI

The next goal is to develop and test a working software prototype. Future improvements may include more accurate anomaly detection, stronger authentication, improved data protection, detailed incident reports, explainable AI recommendations, and more realistic communication-outage simulations. We also aim to evaluate the system using approved cybersecurity datasets and seek feedback from cybersecurity and aviation professionals before considering any real-world application.
