Inspiration
In Burundi, most legal documents are written in French or English, but 90% of citizens are most comfortable in Kirundi. This creates a massive barrier to understanding contracts, government documents, and legal rights. We saw farmers losing land due to unclear rental agreements and workers accepting unfair employment terms simply because they couldn't understand the legal language.
What it does
Scans legal documents using your phone camera or imports PDFs Extracts text using OCR technology Explains complex legal clauses in simple, clear Kirundi Provides section-by-section breakdowns with actionable checklists Reads explanations aloud for accessibility Stores document history for future reference
You snap a photo → the app reads it → explains it in Kirundi → even talks back to you.
How we built it
Frontend: Flutter app with BLoC state management, Google ML Kit for OCR, and Material 3 design Backend: FastAPI server with OpenRouter integration for Gemini AI AI Pipeline: Custom prompts engineered for Kirundi legal explanations Architecture: Clean separation between OCR, AI processing, and local storage using Hive Deployment: Mobile-first design with offline-capable features
Challenges we ran into
Language barriers: Training AI to provide accurate Kirundi translations of complex legal terms Network connectivity: Handling poor internet in rural areas with proper fallbacks Legal accuracy: Ensuring explanations are helpful without providing legal advice OCR quality: Dealing with poor document scans and handwritten text Cultural context: Making sure explanations fit Burundian legal and cultural context
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Built a complete end-to-end solution in record time Successfully integrated multiple AI services (OCR + LLM + TTS) Created an intuitive interface that works for users with varying literacy levels Implemented proper error handling and offline capabilities Designed a scalable architecture that can expand to other languages/countries Made legal information accessible to underserved communities
What we learned
The power of AI in breaking down language barriers for essential services Importance of cultural sensitivity in AI prompt engineering Mobile-first design principles for emerging markets How to balance AI capabilities with user safety and legal disclaimers The critical need for digital inclusion in legal literacy
