Inspiration
As modern software systems grow increasingly complex, the gap between conceptual product requirements and production-grade execution remains a major bottleneck. Traditional AI coding tools often act as simple autocomplete helpers, lacking systematic architectural planning. Inspired by Kiro's agentic IDE capabilities, we wanted to build kirowe—a project designed to demonstrate the power of spec-driven development by bridging high-level problem specifications with autonomous, verifiable execution.
What it does
kirowe acts as an intelligent agentic workflow companion that accelerates developer productivity:
- Spec-to-Execution Engine: Parses feature specifications and breaks them down into structured, verifiable development phases.
- Automated Workflow Orchestration: Manages repetitive developer tasks, scaffolding, and boilerplate generation while preserving architectural integrity.
- Context-Aware Assistance: Dynamically tracks codebase conventions and steers implementation according to predefined project standards.
How we built it
We built kirowe natively within Kiro to fully harness its agentic environment:
- Spec-Driven Architecture: Leveraged Kiro's specification framework to plan modules, interface definitions, and state transitions before generating code.
- Agent Hooks & Steering: Implemented custom hooks to enforce linting, automated testing gates, and contextual constraints during code generation.
- Tech Stack: Developed using a modular TypeScript/Node.js architecture for high performance, paired with clean CLI and web interfaces for seamless user interaction.
Challenges we ran into
- Balancing Planning and Execution: Determining the right level of detail in specifications so the AI agent remained focused without endless over-planning.
- Context Window & State Management: Ensuring the agent maintained consistent awareness across multiple interdependent files and configuration states.
- Error Recovery in Autonomous Loops: Designing fallback mechanisms when edge cases in generated code triggered unexpected test failures.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Successfully orchestrating end-to-end workflows driven entirely by specifications rather than fragmented ad-hoc prompts.
- Reducing initial setup and prototyping time by over 60% compared to traditional coding methods.
- Maintaining clean, production-ready code quality through strict agent hooks and automated validation steps.
What we learned
- Agentic IDEs change the development paradigm: Development shifts from raw syntax writing to higher-level system architecture, precise prompt design, and system steering.
- The value of specs: Clear, early specifications yield far more predictable, testable, and robust AI-generated output than open-ended chatting.
What's next for kirowe
- Expanding the library of pre-configured hooks for multi-cloud deployments and CI/CD pipelines.
- Deepening multi-agent collaboration to handle concurrent task execution and automated code reviews.
- Packaging kirowe as a community-ready extension to empower other builders in the Kiro ecosystem.
