Inspiration
Our project was inspired by the desire to strengthen the local economy of Kingston. We recognized the potential of digital platforms in enhancing the visibility of local businesses and student ventures. By creating an online marketplace, we aimed to bridge the gap between local vendors and residents, fostering a stronger community bond.
What it does
What it does The Kingston Marketplace serves as a digital hub for local businesses and students in Kingston. It provides a platform where they can list and promote their products and services, enhancing local visibility and community engagement.
How we built it
1.Front-End Development:
React: Utilized for its component-based architecture, enabling us to build a scalable and maintainable user interface. Tailwind CSS: Chosen for its utility-first approach, allowing us to rapidly style components while maintaining consistency and responsiveness. Framer Motion: Integrated for adding subtle yet powerful animations, enhancing user interaction and visual appeal.
- Back-End Development:
JavaScript: Served as the core programming language, ensuring seamless integration between front-end and back-end functionalities. Firebase: Authentication: Implemented to provide a secure and sohphisticated login and signup experience. Database: Used for storing and managing data like user profiles, product listings, and images, ensuring real-time updates and data integrity. Feature Implementation:
Advanced Search and Filters: We developed algorithms using Javascript and react to allow users to easily search and filter listings, enhancing user experience. Dynamic Listing Interface: Created an intuitive system for users to add their listings, with real-time preview and editing capabilities. The product listing data being stored in Firebase allows for seamless creation and updation of new listings.
Challenges we ran into
As this was a full-stack robust applicaiton, time was very much of the essence. It was our first time using such a diverse tech-stack, learning and applying these new concepts in such a short time proved to be a real challenge. Nevertheless, we overcame these with our dedication and hardwork. We furthere encountered challenges in designing a user interface that was both technically efficient and user-friendly, especially for listing creation and filtration
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of creating a platform that not only meets modern web standards with its functionalities (like advanced search and filtering) but also significantly supports local commerce and student entrepreneurship in Kingston.
We are a team of 3 and most importantly, its the first hackathon for two of our team members. For them to learn also these modern technologies and apply them in a limited time frame is something that we are really proud of.
What we learned
This project enhanced our skills in modern web development technologies and gave us insights into the needs of local businesses and student communities. We learned the importance of intuitive UI/UX design and effective data management. This project overall helps us shape ourselves into better professionals for the industry and also teaches us with crucial team building skills
What's next for Kingston Marketplace
