Inspiration

“What could I add to the food I already want?”

KindMorsel makes that question a small, practical choice. Start with your meal, consider an addition, and decide what works for you.

Abbey's Hunger Crushing Combo framework inspired the approach: work with foods people enjoy and look for additions that can support satisfaction. We wanted to bring that idea into an everyday interaction that is easy to understand, change, or decline.

What it does

Two starting points meet different moments: “I know what I'm having” and “Help me choose a meal.”

If you already know your food, describe it, use a photo, or speak. Review and correct what the app understood before asking for an idea.

The demo shows two examples:

  • Egg → spinach: keep the egg, consider an addition, and choose whether to accept it. Another option is available if the first idea does not appeal.
  • Toast and avocado → hummus: keep the chosen foods and consider a ready-to-eat addition.

You can also leave the meal as it is. There are no calorie budgets, macro targets, food scores, or streaks.

When you need a starting point, browse 12 illustrated meal ideas. Three short questions help refine the choice around preparation, what sounds good, and how substantial the meal should feel. Ingredients remain editable.

KindMorsel distinguishes a planned meal from one actually eaten. You can edit or cancel a plan before recording it. Optional feedback asks how satisfied you felt and how the meal tasted; saved meals make useful combinations easier to find again.

How judges can try it

Open the iOS app and choose Continue as guest. Choose I know what I'm having, enter Egg, check the recognized ingredient, and tap Show one idea. Try Another option, or leave the meal as it is. Return home and choose Help me choose a meal to explore the second path. Premium testing access is provided in the judges-only submission field.

How we built it

KindMorsel is an iOS app built with Expo, React Native, and TypeScript.

AI interprets meal input. Validated results feed into versioned, deterministic logic that decides whether to recommend an addition and ranks options from a reviewed catalog. Keeping these steps separate makes the recommendation rules inspectable and leaves users in control of recognition corrections and the final choice.

RevenueCat supports subscription access. The app includes monthly and yearly plans, Restore Purchases, and guest access to try the core experience.

Challenges and what we learned

Recognition can be wrong, and a technically valid suggestion may not appeal. Correction, alternatives, and the option to leave food unchanged became central parts of the experience.

The current catalog has 41 reviewed food pairings. This is a bounded starting point, not coverage for every dish or eating situation. The MVP does not screen for allergies and cannot determine whether a food is safe for someone with an allergy.

What's next

Learn which suggestions people find useful, where the catalog lacks coverage, and whether explanations make choices easier. Those findings will guide additional reviewed pairings and improvements to the existing flows.
