Inspiration

Lana and I both went through times where we felt depressed, isolated, and stuck. What helped us was having someone who understood us and pushed us forward. We wanted to build Kindly so more people could have that kind of support.

What it does

Kindly is an AI-powered journaling and personal growth app. Users write journal entries, get personalized daily challenges, discover local events, earn rewards, and reflect after completing tasks so the AI can improve future suggestions. Kindly also includes sleep and screen-time tracking, weekly progress reports, a positive community where users can send AI-moderated compliments, and safety safeguards that prompt users to contact 988 if serious self-harm risk is detected. There is also a therapist website where approved therapists can view helpful client insights and progress, with the user’s permission.

How we built it

We built Kindly with a mobile app, a therapist website, and Firebase Functions for the backend. Dylan worked on the mobile app, while Lana built the website. Firebase handled the backend logic, AI features, journal processing, tasks, and search features.

Challenges we ran into

Our original Firebase Functions did not work as intended. We wanted to use login authentication for more secure functions, but it became more complicated than expected. We simplified the flow and rebuilt a lot of the backend almost from scratch.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the UI, the user experience, the search feature, the journaling flow, and the fact that we built both a mobile app and a website connected to the same backend.

What we learned

Lana learned how to build a full-stack website from scratch, and we both learned how to work together on a complex project with a backend, AI features, and multiple platforms. We also learned how important communication and problem-solving are when building under pressure.

What's next for Kindly

Next, we want to improve the AI recommendations, add better weekly reports and visuals, strengthen the community features, and publish Kindly to the App Store.
