Inspiration

Kenya’s coffee cooperatives, the backbone of rural livelihoods, face long-standing challenges in record-keeping, transparency, and payment tracking. Many still rely on handwritten paper logs, resulting in ghost kilos (undercounted weights), delayed payments, and profit losses of up to 40% to middlemen. These inefficiencies, combined with low digital literacy and poor rural Internet, inspired us to build a solution that brings accountability, speed, and simplicity to every coffee transaction — from the weighing shed to the final payout.

What it does

Kilimogen is a smart cooperative management system designed for Kenya’s coffee sector. It automates weighing, member payment, inventory, and accounting processes — all in one intuitive platform.

Key features include:

  • Offline-first operation with local data storage and cloud sync for rural connectivity gaps.
  • Automated coffee weighing and member payout tracking, reducing ghost kilos.
  • Financial transparency dashboards for co-op leaders.
  • Receipt printing as a means of record keeping for the farmer.
  • SMS-based notifications for farmers to confirm deliveries and payments.
  • Multi-tier subscription model tailored to cooperative size and budget.

By bridging technology and trust, Kilimogen empowers co-ops to run efficiently even in low-tech or low-connectivity settings.

How we Built it

We developed Kilimogen using a modular, offline-first architecture:

  • Backend: Node.js with an embedded local server for offline transactions and cloud synchronization.
  • Frontend: React-based interface optimized for low-spec devices.
  • Database: SQLite for local caching and PostgreSQL for cloud storage.

Our design prioritizes simplicity, reliability, and usability for low-tech users — achieved through field-informed UI testing and community feedback loops.

Challenges we Ran Into

  • Connectivity limitations: Building reliable offline sync mechanisms in low-bandwidth environments.
  • Internet connectivity issues: For some of us, it was really an issue to access the internet and collaborate with poor internet..

Accomplishments That We're Proud Of

  • Successfully built a fully offline-first MVP — a capability lacking in most competitors.
  • Designed a pricing model 50–70% cheaper than typical SACCO ERPs.

What We Learnt

  • Technology adoption in rural sectors depends as much on trust and simplicity as on features.
  • Offline-first design isn’t just a convenience — it’s essential infrastructure for rural Africa.

What's Next for Our Project

  • Pilot rollout with selected coffee cooperatives in Kenya.
  • Farmer mobile app for real-time delivery and payment visibility.
  • Advanced analytics module for yield forecasting and loan tracking.
  • Localization and scalability for other agricultural value chains (tea, dairy, horticulture).
  • Continuous training and support programs to drive adoption across rural Kenya.
