Inspiration
We were inspired by the storytelling power of Turkish Kilim (rug) symbols, each carrying unique meanings and cultural significance. Our goal was to adapt this tradition into an immersive XR interface, where users can explore and create digital spaces that reflect their personal narratives while honoring this rich heritage.
What It Does
The project enables users to create personalized digital environments by designing their own rugs in a mixed-reality setting. Using Meta headsets, users can scan their surroundings and integrate customizable kilim designs into their physical or digital space, transforming traditional patterns into modern, interactive elements.
How We Built It
We began by modernizing traditional kilim symbols, breaking them down into modular pieces to allow for greater customization. The process of creating kilims was gamified, enabling users to assemble patterns, select colors, and experiment with layouts intuitively within the XR platform.
Challenges We Ran Into
One major challenge was balancing the traditional aesthetic of Turkish kilims with modern design elements, ensuring that the digital adaptation remained authentic yet innovative. Another was optimizing the interface for seamless interaction, as designing within an XR environment required intuitive controls and responsiveness.
Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
We successfully translated a centuries-old craft into an engaging and interactive XR experience, bringing cultural storytelling to the forefront of digital design. We’re proud of how the project merges technology with tradition, offering users both creative freedom and a connection to heritage.
What We Learned
This project taught us the importance of cultural sensitivity when working with traditional motifs. We also learned about the technical complexities of designing for XR platforms, particularly in creating user-friendly interfaces that enhance creativity without overwhelming users.
What’s Next
We aim to enable multi-user collaboration, allowing real-time co-creation in shared virtual spaces. Additionally, we plan to expand the kilim pattern library and add more color options, offering users greater creative freedom and supporting workshops, events, and educational experiences.
