Inspiration
Our main inspiration came from the theme of this hackathon. While arcades and cats are beloved by most, combining them proved a difficult task. We asked, "why would a cat even be in an arcade to begin with?" and the idea stemmed from there, with unique methods of movement driving the games main style.
What it does
Kiki's Escape from the Nyarcade is a strategy / puzzle game focused around Kiki the cat. Confirmed within a box and armed with nothing but a control remote to the arcade, Kiki must manipulate their surroundings to survive the oncoming zombie hoard.
How we built it
Kiki's Escape from the Nyarcade was programmed entirely in GameMaker, with sprites created in Piskel and Aesprite. The sound effects for the game were made in Waveform, with assistance from Grace Mixer.
Challenges we ran into
Managing our time and resources was definitely our biggest challenge. Many ideas for additional features in the game had to be scrapped due to the limited format, and team coordination also proved challenging at times. Additionally, some tasks that needed to be done, such as creating and implementing the sprites for Kiki, were repetitive and oftentimes frustrating, but necessary.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Despite the end result not being everything we desired it to be in the beginning, the result created was still an incredible feat of teamwork and game design. Each person in the group used their strengths to create the project, with each of their personalities and abilities being reflected within it. That teamwork alone is something to be proud of.
What we learned
This event was a great learning experience for us all. The time constraints applied from the event taught us how to work together under pressure, while highlighting each of our strengths to create the best project possible, while also requiring proper adaptation and time management skills to create the best outcome.
What's next for Kiki's Escape from the Nyarcade
The future is unknown, but I think this hack shows the potential for this concept to work in a gameplay situation, which could allow for a full-scale project to be developed with enough time and effort put into it.
