Inspiration

Driven by my grandfather’s battle with kidney disease, I created this project to empower people through hydration awareness

What it does

This application was developed to help users monitor their kidney health by tracking their water intake and to empower them to build sustainable hydration habits.

How we built it

The Tech Stack Frontend: React (Vite) for a fast, component-based UI. AI Engine: Google Gemini 1.5 Flash for personalized weekly tips and a real-time chatbot. Vision: Custom Pixel Analysis Algorithm to detect hydration levels from photos. Charts: Chart.js for dynamic 7-day trend visualization. Storage: LocalStorage (Privacy-First) – user data stays on the device. Key Features Hybrid Tracking: Combines manual logging with AI-powered photo detection. Personalized Insights: AI analyzes 7-day trends to provide tailored hydration coaching. Privacy by Design: Zero-server architecture ensures total user data anonymity. Feasibility Highly Scalable: No backend costs; uses lightweight, cost-effective AI models. Market Ready: Built with mobile-first CSS, ready for deployment as a PWA (Progressive Web App). Real-World Logic: Includes a "Human-in-the-loop" verification to ensure accuracy despite varying photo lighting.

Challenges we ran into

Team Collaboration: As a new team, we had to navigate the learning curve of group dynamics and conflict resolution to align our vision. Version Control (GitHub): Managing a shared codebase for the first time presented significant challenges with merge conflicts and repository structure. Technical Knowledge Gap: We faced a steep learning curve regarding API security (managing API_KEY), environment variables, and integrating multiple programming languages. Time Management: Balancing the complexity of AI integration with a ticking hackathon clock required us to prioritize features quickly.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

First and foremost, we are incredibly proud to have built an application that positively impacts people’s health and helps them develop life-changing habits. Moreover, we take great pride in our personal growth and the wealth of knowledge we’ve gained throughout this journey. And lastly, we are so proud of ourselves that we are in this kind of hackathon.

What we learned

Technical Growth: Integrating Google Gemini AI and building Computer Vision logic for real-time color analysis. Version Control: Overcoming GitHub challenges and managing a shared codebase as a team. Team Dynamics: Navigating disagreements and learning the importance of communication in high-pressure environments. Privacy & Ethics: Building a local-first architecture to protect sensitive health data and ensuring AI safety.

What's next for KidneyGuard

Moving forward, we aim to transition KidneyGuard into a dedicated mobile application to provide seamless, on-the-go tracking for our users. We are focused on optimizing our AI performance for near-instant insights and developing a secure user authentication system to allow for encrypted cloud synchronization across devices. Our ultimate goal is to evolve KidneyGuard from a web-based tool into a comprehensive, high-speed health companion that empowers proactive kidney care for everyone, everywhere
