Inspiration:

The inspiration behind this project is my niece, Maysen, a creative, kind-hearted young woman in her early 20s who is living with advanced kidney disease and urgently needs a transplant. Watching her persevere through something so difficult made one thing clear: I had to be part of the solution, not just a witness to the struggle.

This website became my way of taking action. It’s a way to help Maysen find a living donor, but also to raise awareness about the life-saving potential of living kidney donation. I wanted to show that one act of generosity, one person, can truly change the course of someone’s life.

What it does:

Kidney for Maysen is designed to help find a living kidney donor and raise awareness about living donation. It shares Maysen’s story, explains the donor process simply, answers common questions, and offers direct links to take action. The site is emotional yet clear and easy to navigate, guiding visitors from awareness to potential life-saving steps.

How I built it:

Using Bolt.new, I generated the site’s initial structure and content, then customized the design, copy, and layout to reflect Maysen’s story and voice. I focused on creating a straightforward, compassionate experience that encourages visitors to learn and act. The site was deployed on Netlify with a custom domain.

Challenges:

Creating something so personal came with its own set of challenges. It wasn’t easy to translate an emotional, real-life situation into a digital experience that felt clear, hopeful, and actionable. I had to learn how to present medical information in a way that was accessible without being overwhelming.

Accomplishments:

Despite having minimal experience in web design and development, I successfully built and launched a fully functional, user-friendly website that shares Maysen’s story with honesty and heart. Leveraging AI tools enabled me to move quickly and effectively. The site is already raising awareness and serving as a valuable resource for our community. Most importantly, it’s given Maysen a voice and a renewed sense of hope in her journey to find a donor.

What I learned:

This was my first time building a website with AI, and it was surprisingly empowering. AI helped me move quickly from concept to execution, turning a daunting goal into something achievable. It allowed me to focus on what mattered most: crafting a personal, clear story and creating a meaningful experience.

What's next for Kidney for Maysen:

The priority now is to increase awareness by sharing the site widely to reach potential donors and supporters. I’ll continue refining the content to keep it accurate and accessible, and explore partnerships with transplant organizations to amplify the message. Ultimately, the goal is to turn this personal mission into a powerful platform that can save lives, not just for Maysen, but for others in need.
