Inspiration: Homework can become stressful when kids get stuck and parents are busy. We wanted to create a safer way for children ages 5–12 to get help without relying on general AI tools that may give answers too quickly or explain things at the wrong level. What it does: KiddieGPT is a Chrome extension that helps children understand homework through kid-friendly explanations, guiding hints, quizzes, flashcards, and worksheet support. It is designed to encourage learning rather than copying answers. How we built it: We built KiddieGPT as a Manifest V3 Chrome extension with a side-panel interface. The extension uses AI to turn questions and study material into explanations, hints, quizzes, and flashcards. We designed the experience to be simple, calm, and easy for children to use while keeping parents in control. Challenges we ran into: The biggest challenge was finding the balance between being helpful and preventing answer-copying. We also had to make AI responses understandable for a wide age range, from early elementary learners to older children. Designing a child-friendly interface without making it feel childish for older kids required careful iteration. Accomplishments that we're proud of: We created a working browser-based learning companion that brings AI help directly alongside a child’s homework. We are proud that KiddieGPT focuses on hints and understanding, rather than just solving problems. We also built worksheet support, quizzes, flashcards, and parent-focused safety ideas into one experience. What we learned: We learned that AI for kids needs more than good answers. It needs clear boundaries, age-aware language, thoughtful guidance, and parent trust. We also learned that the best learning experience often starts with a simple question: “What have you tried so far?” What's next for KiddieGPT: Next, we plan to add child profiles, progress tracking, parent dashboards, more personalized learning paths, and improved worksheet support. We also want to test KiddieGPT with real families and teachers so we can make homework time calmer, more confident, and more meaningful.
