Inspiration

While trying out the smart ball, we missed a social aspect of interaction. With inspiration from games like Pokemon Go, we wanted create a solution which would enhance the social interaction between users.

What it does

KickAss is a simple, easy-to-use game, which would introduce the user to the social gaming with the Adidas smart ball.

We believe our app can be fun to use for professional football players, but also for regular consumers who want to challenge their friends and have fun. This opens up a bigger market for the smart ball to also attract regular football fans.

We also had an idea to extend the functions of the app by syncing LEDs in Adidas shoes to the ball. The light gives feedback to the user while playing and it's a great way to show progress like achievements and reaching your high score. We also see possibilities to use the lights in shoes while training and we imagined that you can set the goal when you leave on a jog, you can say that you want to make 7000 steps, so the lights on the shoe will change when you achieve 30%, 60 % 100%. It will make you want more, it will make you run faster and further. And you wouldn't need to bring your smartphone with you while running.

How we built it

We used the adidas-provided api, and expanded from there. It's an Android application, so it can run on almost any Android phone or tablet. For the shoes we connected a Bluefruit Feather, and an Osram LED driver to control the LED's.

Challenges we ran into

In the case of the app, the API was not counting the kicks very well, but using the latest version of the library which was updated by the guys from adidas, we achieved much better results.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We created a very cool and fun basic app, which is a great base to extend upon in the future. We're very proud of the shoes as well, because the idea, the concept is what makes it great, having a way to visualize your progress just by looking at your shoes.

What we learned

We worked extremely well as a team, so we learned that you do not need to plan ahead, meet the people before, you just have to have the same ideals, to work together to achieve your goals, insist and help each other, support and improve the individual ideas. We learned that you can find your team at breakfast, with people from a bunch of different countries, and in a couple of days come up with awesome ideas and create awesome content.

What's next for KickAss

The next step for KickAss would be to finish the prototype of the app. But also to explore more possibilities for the smart ball based on social interacitve gaming. We have more ideas and we see a huge potential of creating more smilar games and gather them in a smart ball store.
