Inspiration

Reddit is filled with AI slop, and everyone seems to have become an expert at identifying what was written by AI and what was written by a human. That inspired me to build Boot the Bot, a social-deduction game where players can finally put those instincts to the test and kick the AI out of the chat.

How I Built It

I built the game with Devvit Web, React, TypeScript, Redis, and Devvit Realtime. Each match includes anonymous human players and one hidden bot. Players answer a prompt, investigate suspicious responses, select an interrogation question, and vote to remove the bot.

The game supports Quick Match, private rooms, four difficulty leagues, reconnect recovery, moderation, progression, and a single-player Practice mode.

What I Learned

I learned that shorter answers can make humans and bots surprisingly difficult to distinguish. I also learned how important server-controlled state, deterministic transitions, and reconnect recovery are for reliable multiplayer games.

Challenges

The biggest challenges were synchronizing serverless multiplayer rooms, protecting the bot's identity, safely handling simultaneous actions, and creating varied bot responses without live AI calls. I solved these with Redis-backed state, atomic actions, anonymous player data, and a curated content bank.
