Inspiration
During long-term work from home conditions there is crystal clear need for lost socialization aspect of our work places - corporate kitchen or cafe. When colleagues meet by water cooler or cappuccino machine they chat, brainstorm, exchange their ideas and stories. They eat lunch together and tell about weekend adventures. With isolation all this is lost or crippled by trying to use video chat solutions that are not intended for such meet-ups. There is need for fun place where colleagues can come anytime and meet other colleagues. With virtual space opportunities it can be made fun and socialization returned as good as possible, in some sense colleagues can kichup even better.
Virtual kitchen is social place, easy accessible, but limited in time you can spend there (because still duties must be done), random colleagues from random departments can show up anytime, sometimes even people from outside company can accidentally show up, which is fine. You can arrange short story telling about weekend, initiate dance off, challenge to exercise, involve in short relaxing games and do other fun stuff what usually happens in kitchen.
What it does
Platform allows easily create virtual kitchen, share it and join it for 15min (or other defined limit) within defined time frame and kichup with up to 16 colleagues.
How I built it
For now kichup is built as proof of concept using Javascript, HTML, CSS3, Agora.io and AWS services.
Challenges I ran into
Set-up proof of concept running on AWS without database, automatically deploying from bitbucket and implement communication services without any technical knowledge about it. Make it somewhat user friendly and device responsive and neutral.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
It runs good and feels good as proof of concept.
What I learned
It's possible to implement video chat solution learning little bit of this and that.
What's next for Kichup.com
During Hackaton I want to bring this platform to next level and launch it for public with already set of features.
Technical:
- Harden proof of concept with reliable infrastructure and system architecture,
- Implement notifications
- Implement activities (games, dance-off, exercise, etc)
Non-technical:
- Launch public (incorporate, brand, marketing, finance)
- Find best monetization model
- Brainstorm and think how to implement gamification perspective to make it more interesting
- Get fun and excited
