This idea formed by the conversation of wanting to be able to go to provide Muslim countries assistance, but we realized there aren’t many volunteer opportunities that align with our faith and values as Muslims. That’s when we thought, why not create a platform that makes these kinds of meaningful, faith-aligned volunteer opportunities accessible to everyone?
We learned that there’s a real passion among young Muslims for service opportunities that are both impactful and rooted in Islamic principles. We see this especially through initiatives like the UIUC's Muslim Student Association’s annual relief trips, which always attract huge participation, but these experiences are limited to certain groups and short-term projects. Many of our peers expressed interest in volunteering abroad but didn’t know where to start or how to find programs that reflect their values.
One of the biggest challenges was finding credible, Muslim-backed scholarly research on volunteerism, which showed us how untapped this space really is. It reinforced our belief that Khidmah Abroad isn’t just a platform, it’s an opportunity to pioneer a new approach to faith-based service and global engagement.
