Inspiration

Indonesia is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world, yet its younger generation is slowly losing interest in preserving local heritage. There is no centralized platform that promotes cultural education, discussions, and engagement, especially in a digital format. We were inspired to create Khatulistiwa to address this gap by providing a digital space for cultural promotion, AI-powered exploration, and inclusive volunteering opportunities.

What it does

Khatulistiwa is a mobile-first cultural preservation platform that allows users to: • Explore Indonesian culture across all provinces through digital content and interactive maps. • Join anonymous discussion forums to exchange cultural ideas safely. • Ask cultural questions through an AI chatbot called “Penjaga Budaya”. • Register as volunteers for upcoming cultural events and join a dedicated volunteer hub. • Translate app content into multiple languages for inclusivity.

How we built it

Khatulistiwa was built collaboratively during an offline 30-hour hackathon using: • Figma for high-fidelity interface and user journey prototyping. • Manual user interviews and on-site validation to define key features. • Midjourney & AI prompts for creating illustrations and ideation assets. The final submission includes a fully designed prototype, documentation, and a validated feature list.

Challenges we ran into

• Designing an inclusive experience for diverse age groups and nationalities.
• Simplifying user flow to support both cultural learners and active volunteers.
• Managing real-time collaboration in a limited hackathon timeframe.
• Structuring content to remain culturally accurate and non-stereotypical.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

• Completed a working prototype with a multi-feature system in under 30 hours.
• Built a unique volunteer system tailored for global participants.
• Created an engaging yet educational experience through AI integration.
• Promoted Indonesian cultural diversity with a modern design approach.

What we learned

    • Real user insights are essential to design features that resonate.
• Cultural preservation apps must balance design, accessibility, and accuracy.
• AI tools can support—but not replace—authentic human stories and heritage.
• Clear design documentation speeds up both prototyping and feedback loops.

What's next for Khatulistiwa Apps

    • Backend and front-end development of the app.
• Integration with real-time maps and APIs for event listings.
• Expansion of AI training datasets to better cover regional languages and dialects.
• Partnership with local communities and schools for outreach programs.
• Launching a beta version and onboarding early volunteers globally.
