Inspiration
Formula 1 drivers need incredibly fast reaction times. Before getting behind the wheel, drivers train their reflexes through exercises involving lights, balls, and other reaction-based challenges.
That inspired us to create Key Reflex — a simple but competitive game that turns reaction training into a fun 15-second challenge. Instead of using complicated equipment, all you need is a keyboard.
What it does
Key Reflex is a fast-paced reaction-time game where players are shown a random letter and must press the corresponding key as quickly as possible.
A new letter appears after every correct response, and the challenge continues for 15 seconds. At the end of the round, the game evaluates the player's performance based on:
- ⚡ Average reaction time
- 🎯 Accuracy
- 🏆 Score
- ⌨️ Correct and incorrect responses
The goal is simple: react as quickly and accurately as possible.
How we built it
We designed Key Reflex around a simple gameplay loop:
Show a letter → Detect the key press → Measure reaction time → Calculate score → Repeat
The game continuously tracks keyboard input and timestamps each letter so that the player's reaction time can be measured accurately.
We focused on keeping the interface lightweight and responsive because even small delays can affect a reaction-time game.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was making the reaction-time measurement feel accurate and responsive.
We also had to handle several things simultaneously:
- Detecting keyboard input instantly
- Measuring reaction time for every attempt
- Handling incorrect key presses
- Managing the 15-second countdown
- Updating the score and accuracy in real time
- Preventing the game state from becoming inconsistent during rapid inputs
Balancing simplicity with a fast and engaging user experience was another important challenge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of turning a simple F1-inspired concept into a complete, playable reaction game.
Some of the highlights include:
- ⚡ Real-time reaction-time tracking
- 🎯 Accuracy measurement
- 🏆 Dynamic scoring
- ⏱️ 15-second competitive gameplay
- ⌨️ Instant keyboard interaction
- 🔄 Quick replayability
Most importantly, the game is simple enough to understand within seconds but challenging enough to make players want to try again and beat their previous score.
What we learned
This project helped us understand how to build an interactive application where timing and user input are critical.
We learned more about handling keyboard events, managing game state, working with timers, calculating performance metrics, and designing interfaces where responsiveness directly affects the user experience.
We also learned that a good game doesn't necessarily need complicated mechanics — a simple idea with well-designed feedback can still be highly engaging.
What's next for Key Reflex
This is only the beginning. In the future, we want to expand Key Reflex from a simple reaction game into a more complete reaction-training platform.
Some ideas include:
- 🏎️ F1-inspired themes and animations
- 🌎 Global leaderboard with database
- 🥇 Personal bests and player profiles
- 📊 Detailed reaction-time statistics
- 🔥 Streak and combo systems
- 🎮 Multiple game modes
- 📅 Daily and weekly challenges
Our goal is to make Key Reflex a fun way for anyone to test, train, and compete on their reaction speed.
