Inspiration
As a lifelong home baker following a keto diet, I grew frustrated with dry, rubbery "keto bread" recipes that never lived up to bakery-quality loaves. I noticed fellow keto and gluten-free bakers in my community struggled with the same issues – mismeasured flours, wrong baking temps, and no clear troubleshooting guides. That’s when I decided to build a tool that combined my love for baking with my web development skills: KetoBread Baker.
What it does
KetoBread Baker is a one-stop web app for keto bread baking. It features a curated library of low-carb bread recipes, a side-by-side flour comparison tool (almond, coconut, flaxseed), a baking parameter optimizer to tweak temps/times, a troubleshooting guide for common fails, and a nutrition calculator to track macros per serving. Free users get access to core tools and sample recipes, while subscribers unlock full recipe access and advanced features.
How we built it
I started by researching 20+ tested keto bread recipes, validating nutrition data, and interviewing gluten-free bakers to identify pain points. I designed the UI in Figma (sticking to warm, bakery-inspired tones) before building the front end with React and Bootstrap for responsiveness. The back end uses Node.js and PostgreSQL to store recipe/nutrition data, with AWS for hosting. I integrated third-party nutrition APIs to automate macro calculations and Chart.js for visual flour comparisons.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest hurdle was balancing precision and usability – baking parameters (like oven temp ranges) needed to be accurate but easy to adjust for home bakers. I also struggled with nutrition calculation accuracy: different flour brands have slight macro variations, so I had to average and validate data against USDA databases. Additionally, designing intuitive filters for the recipe library (prep time, flour type, difficulty) required multiple user tests to avoid confusing workflows.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Seeing beta users report perfect, non-rubbery keto loaves using the parameter optimizer was incredibly rewarding. We also hit a milestone of 500+ free users in the first month, with many requesting full subscriptions for the complete recipe library. The flour comparison tool became a fan favorite – users shared it in keto baking groups, calling it "the only guide they need for flour swaps."
What we learned
I learned how to translate niche domain knowledge (keto baking) into accessible web functionality – not just coding, but empathizing with user needs (e.g., clear troubleshooting for sunken loaves). I also mastered API integration for dynamic nutrition data and learned to prioritize core features (like recipe filtering) over nice-to-haves to keep the MVP focused.
What's next for this project
Next, we plan to add a "save favorite recipes" feature (once we build a lightweight account system) and expand the flour library to include lesser-known keto flours (like pumpkin seed meal). We’re also partnering with keto nutritionists to refine the nutrition calculator and add a "meal planning" feature to pair bread recipes with keto meals. Eventually, we hope to launch a mobile-responsive version for bakers to use while in the kitchen.
