What it does

Inspiration

The inspiration for Kejayangu came from my brother’s experience when he was called to Daystar University in Athi River, a completely new environment for him. Finding safe and affordable accommodation as a first-year student was a major challenge. He didn’t know who to trust, and many students around him fell victim to rental scams or ended up in unsafe living conditions. Parents also struggled to find trustworthy housing options for their children, especially in areas far from home. Seeing these challenges inspired me to create Kejayangu—a trusted student housing platform that connects students with verified landlords while giving parents peace of mind about where their children stay.

What it does

Kejayangu provides a safe and transparent platform where students can find and book verified accommodation near their schools. Every property is validated for authenticity to prevent scams and ensure trust. The platform also allows parents to view payment receipts and confirm their child’s housing status online. Landlords can list and manage their properties, track paid and empty houses, and interact directly with tenants through a simple and transparent system.

How we built it

Kejayangu was built using Laravel for the backend to ensure security, scalability, and structured data handling. The frontend was developed with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for a clean and responsive interface. The platform architecture focuses on data validation and smooth interaction between tenants, landlords, and parents. Although time constraints during the hackathon limited feature completion, the foundation includes verified listings, secure logins, and a system ready for integration with future features such as mobile access, filters, and local service partnerships.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was limited time during the hackathon, which made it difficult to complete all planned features such as mobile app development, payment integration, and automated verification. Managing data relationships between users, listings, and transactions in Laravel also required careful database design. Additionally, ensuring a balance between simplicity and security was a learning curve.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I’m proud of creating a working prototype that directly addresses real student housing challenges in Kenya. The project successfully demonstrates verified listings, a transparent fee structure, and a user-friendly interface. I’m also proud of translating a personal challenge into a real-world solution that can help thousands of students and parents.

What we learned

Through this project, I learned the importance of building trust through verification and transparency. I gained deeper knowledge of Laravel’s backend architecture, authentication, and data handling. I also learned how design simplicity improves user adoption and how technology can directly address everyday social problems.

What's next for Kejayangu, Your Trusted Student Housing Platform

Next, I plan to complete all unfinished features, including the price and location filters, a fully functional mobile app, and an advanced landlord dashboard. I will also integrate secure online payment systems, allowing parents and students to pay directly and receive digital receipts. Future plans include partnering with local service providers such as garbage collection, cleaning, and security companies to create a safe, connected, and efficient housing ecosystem. My long-term goal is to scale Kejayangu beyond SEKU to serve universities and students across Kenya and eventually expand throughout East Africa.
