The Wilderness Society's mission aligns closely with REI's philanthropic values. We believe that by partnering with REI, who has an existing customer base of 18+ million members, we can more effectively crowdsource data collection in the wilderness. By launching the #KeepItWild campaign on REI's hiking app (Hiking Project), it allows us to leverage their existing platform to raise awareness and get outdoor enthusiasts to take meaningful action.

What it does

Donna logs into Hiking Project and chooses which trail she wants to earn rewards for completing various goals. Goals include taking photos of wildlife, documenting/counting animals, reporting environmental hazards, etc. Trails that are less popular and in need of data are rewarded with more points (acorns) for goal completion. Acorns can then be redeemed for various discounts at REI.

Challenges we ran into

  • Learning how to use the DocuSign API in a short period of time
  • Not finishing the project in time!
  • Coming up with a more complex idea that we can't execute in 1 day
  • API problems

What's next for #KeepItWild

We are excited to partner with REI to turn this into a viral sensation. We plan to launch social media campaigns to spread awareness of the #keepitwild campaign and partnership.
