Inspiration

As a busy parent, I’d grown frustrated with conflicting food safety advice—throwing out good food or risking bad meals. I wanted a simple, trusted tool to take the guesswork out of food safety, something accessible to everyone from busy caregivers to health-focused shoppers.

What it does

FoodSafety Check is a web app that helps users determine food safety through photo analysis, expiration date evaluation, tailored storage recommendations, and access to product recall alerts. It also offers a trusted knowledge base for food safety guidance, with clear, actionable insights for everyday use.

How we built it

We started with user-centric design, mapping core pain points (expiration confusion, spoilage uncertainty) to key features. We built the frontend with React and Bootstrap for mobile-first responsiveness, integrated date calculation logic for expiration checks, and structured the recall/storage databases for fast, intuitive search. The visual analysis feature was built to process food imagery and deliver clear safety verdicts, with color-coded status badges for instant clarity.

Challenges we ran into

Designing intuitive navigation for diverse users (from tech novices to experienced shoppers) was tough—we iterated multiple times to simplify feature access. Balancing detailed food safety information with plain-language explanations also required careful refinement to avoid overwhelming users while keeping advice accurate.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We created a tool that’s truly accessible: no login required, mobile-friendly, and free of jargon. The color-coded safety rating system makes results instantly understandable, and user testing showed the app reduced food waste and anxiety around meal safety for early users.

What we learned

We deepened our understanding of food safety guidelines specific to common household foods, and learned how to translate complex regulatory information into approachable, actionable advice. We also mastered balancing feature richness with simplicity—cutting unnecessary complexity to keep the app focused on user needs.

What's next for this project

We plan to expand the recall alert database to include more regional product information, add temperature tracking for storage recommendations, and enhance the photo analysis feature to cover more food types. We also aim to integrate barcode scanning for faster expiration and product lookup.
