Inspiration
Drawing upon the SwampHacks IX prompt of using a dataset to further the public good, we as a group wanted to create a product that would allow people to take a more active in their communities. Amidst the current environment of climate change and environmental issues mounting, we thought that it would be interesting if we could make a tool that would help people be more mindful of the environment and take an action-oriented stance to combat the current issues. Our vision for this project was guided by these two goals.
What it does
The app takes a user-input city name and parses an EPA dataset containing information pertaining to cleanup sites around the state of Florida. The program then plots a list of potential locations that the user could choose to volunteer at. The user can join a cleanup group at any of the locations listed. When a group has reached its capacity of eight members, registered users will be sent a notification containing the cleanup details.
How we built it
The project was built entirely using Python on the PyCharm IDE. We used the Pandas, GeoPy, Kivy, and KivyMD libraries.
Challenges we ran into
One of the largest challenges that we faced was leaning how to implement the entirely unfamiliar Kivy library in a short time frame,
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Some components of the project that we are proud of include the user interface and the integration of the GeoPy library to get an accurate map.
What we learned
From participating in this hackathon, we became more familiar with Python as a language and used several libraries that we had never previously implemented.
What's next for Keep It Green
In the future, we plan to integrate a server into the application. This would allow for global usage of the app and allow for more comprehensive storage of user information. Currently, the app uses a dataset that only contains information about cleanup sites in Florida. We would eventually like to expand our project to a national scale. Additionally, we would like to include more interactive features that allow users in the same group to communicate through the app.
