Inspiration

Meet Amina, a skilled domestic worker in Kigali. Despite years of experience, she struggles to find stable work. Employers hesitate to hire her because she lacks proof of her skills. Without a work history, she can’t negotiate better wages or access financial services. She remains stuck in uncertainty while job portals ignore informal workers like her. Amina’s story is not unique—73.4% of Rwanda’s workforce faces the same struggle. KaziLink was born to bridge this gap, offering informal workers a verifiable digital identity to unlock opportunities and financial inclusion.

What it does

KaziLink provides informal workers with a digital profile that verifies their work history, skills, and reliability. Employers can review worker ratings, testimonials, and skills, making hiring easier and fairer.

How we built it

Challenges we ran into

We initially explored a USSD-based solution for non-smartphone users but faced technical and cost limitations. We decided to pause this feature for future iterations.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Successfully built a working prototype that enables informal workers to register and create verifiable digital profiles.

What we learned

Demographic research helped us understand the struggles of informal workers. Collaboration was key in refining the platform. Complex algorithm fixes were needed to verify worker credibility. Empathy—stepping into the shoes of informal workers gave us deeper insights into their challenges.

What's next for KaziLink

Enhancing the platform beyond the prototype version. Registering the company with RDB (Rwanda Development Board). Conducting idea validation with real users. Developing strategies for onboarding employers and workers.
