Inspiration
Kaweah Oaks Preserve is located in Tulare County, California east of the city of Visalia. The preserve spans 344 acres and is one of the last remaining Valley Oak riparian forests in the San Joaquin Valley. Our app's purpose is to get more people and families to visit Kaweah Oaks Preserve. We would like others to have a great experience and learn about the preserve.
What our app does
Our app has various functions. Our app has an interactive map that allows you to go through the different trails. You can also track your exercise by using the pedometer feature. In the extras area, there is a camera feature that allows you to take a picture and share it on social media within the app. Test your knowledge about Kaweah Oaks Preserve by playing a short trivia game that keeps track of the questions you get right by giving you a score. There is also an area just for information about the preserve. Finally, for more information, our app has a button that sends you to the official Kaweah Oaks Preserve website.
How we built it
We designed and programmed the app using MIT App Inventor in collaboration with the Kaweah Oaks Preserve staff during our field research visit.
Challenges we ran into
The challenges that we ran into were the programming of the quiz and the pedometer. We ran into challenges with these features because we did not know how to program these features at first. We got past these challenges by repeatedly coding and testing until the features worked properly.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the quiz feature and the pedometer because those were the functions that we had the most trouble programming.
What we learned
We learned how to program and code an app. We also learned how to program a quiz and pedometer plus a QR code scanner and a camera feature.
What's next for Kaweah Oaks Preserve: Informational Guide
We would like the app to be available to the visitors of Kaweah Oaks Preserve. Also, we would like to get feedback from the employees of the preserve to see what they would like to see added to the app.
