Inspiration
This world was born from the love and excitement of my players, and inspired by our fan-favorite Kawaii’s Rainbow Daycare! I took the learnings from that experience and turned it up a notch, creating something even better, thanks to feedback from users who’ve been asking for a pet-focused world AND a cozy coffee shop. So, I combined the best of both worlds in the Kitty Care Cafe! My daughter also asked for a place to play with adorable kitties, and I couldn’t resist bringing that to life! But this project means so much more to me—it’s created in loving memory of our sweet family cat, Buttermilk, who recently crossed the Rainbow Bridge. This world is full of heart and love, deeply rooted in Kawaii branding and my universe.
How we built it
I used a wide range of tools to bring Kawaii's Kitty Care Café to life, including Blender for 3D modeling, Substance Painter for detailed textures. For world-building, I relied on the Meta Horizon Desktop and VR Editors, while Horizon Sound Generator and Eleven Labs helped me create the perfect sound design, ensuring an immersive experience with engaging sound effects and music. Canva was also integral to creating the UI and promotional material. Development followed my tried-and-true “design, test, iterate” cycle, with a strong focus on mobile-first optimization. Mobile playtesting played a crucial role in shaping the final experience, ensuring that both mobile and VR players could enjoy the world seamlessly.
What it does
Care for kitties or unwind with a cat-puccino in Kawaii's Kitty Care Café. Head to the spa to bathe, blow-dry, and paint your kitty's nails—or help nurse sick or injured kitties back to health with gentle care. Style your favorite felines with cute accessories and browse tons of custom avatar merch in the shop.
Challenges we ran into
Trying to meet the needs of our VR and mobile community by incorporating familiar gameplay while creating an all new experience. Handcrafting all assets and textures was time-consuming, especially when trying to maintain a high level of detail and quality. Another challenge was the difference in color vibrancy between mobile and VR platforms, which required adjusting the color palette to ensure it aligned with the Kawaii brand and remained visually consistent. Additionally, the game’s complex and in-depth TypeScript scripting and custom UI added another layer of complexity. Implementing custom interactions and ensuring the UI was intuitive while also optimizing it for both mobile and VR was a significant challenge. To work around these difficulties, I focused on extensive mobile playtesting and used iterative development to refine the visual experience and interactions. Through careful fine-tuning and adjustments, I was able to ensure both the UI and gameplay were smooth, engaging, and consistent across platforms.
Accomplishments that we're proud of and what we learned
I’m most proud of creating a mobile-first game that still delivers a great experience in VR, as I have a large user base on both platforms. Balancing the needs of both was a challenge, but the end result is a seamless experience on both. I was able to incorporate lessons from previous work while pushing my skills further, which was incredibly rewarding. One standout accomplishment was building an interactive tutorial with an on-screen sprite to guide players through the world. This significantly improved the first-time user experience, making it easier for new players to understand the gameplay mechanics and dive right in.
I’m also proud of the optimization efforts, particularly the creation of 9 different interactive stations where players can take care of their kitties without compromising performance. Meeting high performance expectations on both mobile and VR was key. Additionally, I built a dynamic currency system where players can earn soft currency (kitty bucks) and hard currency (gems), which can be used to purchase accessories or unlock special features like becoming a manager or entering the garden-themed VIP area for exclusive kitties. This progression system adds another layer of reward and engagement for players.
What's next for Kawaii's Kitty Care Cafe
I plan to institute live updates with new kitties, shirts, and accessories on a monthly basis, keeping the content fresh and exciting for players. I’ll also be theming the world based on holidays and seasons to ensure there’s always something new to look forward to. With more time, I would have created a more in-depth tutorial, one that not only guides players through the basic interactions but also explains advanced features like currency systems, customization options, and how to efficiently progress through the game. The tutorial would have included interactive steps, tips, and mini-challenges to give players a deeper understanding of the world’s mechanics and enhance the overall experience. Additionally, I would have added daily quests to drive retention, encouraging players to log in regularly for small rewards and helping keep them engaged with the world over time.
