Project Story: Kathanam – Bridging Communication for the Deaf and Mute

Inspiration

Communication is a basic human right, yet millions of deaf and mute individuals face significant barriers in education, workplaces, and daily life due to a lack of accessible tools. Inspired by the need for inclusive technology, we built Kathanam, an AI-driven platform that empowers real-time communication and interactive learning for the deaf and mute community. Our goal is to bridge the communication gap and create a more accessible and inclusive world.

What It Does

🔹 AI-Powered Sign Language Translation – Converts text to sign animations, sign to text, and text to speech for seamless communication.
🔹 Gesture Recognition AI – Detects and interprets sign language gestures using computer vision and machine learning.
🔹 Interactive Learning Hub – Provides structured ISL & ASL courses, quizzes, and videos to help users master sign language.
🔹 Real-Time Communication Support – Helps deaf and mute individuals interact effortlessly in educational, social, and professional settings.

How We Built It

🚀 Frontend: React.js for a dynamic and accessible UI
Backend: Firebase for authentication, real-time database, and cloud storage
🤖 AI & ML: TensorFlow, PyTorch, and OpenVINO for sign language recognition and NLP processing
📱 Mobile Development: Swift for seamless iOS integration and accessibility

Challenges We Ran Into

🚧 Real-Time Gesture Recognition – Training accurate AI models for sign detection with limited datasets was a major hurdle.
🚧 Latency & Performance – Ensuring instantaneous translation while keeping the system lightweight and scalable.
🚧 User Accessibility & UX – Designing an intuitive and engaging interface for non-tech-savvy users.

Accomplishments That We're Proud Of

🏆 Successfully built a real-time AI-powered sign language translator that improves accessibility.
🏆 Developed an interactive learning platform with engaging ISL & ASL courses.
🏆 Created a scalable, cloud-based system to support global accessibility.
🏆 Pioneered an AI-driven solution that fosters inclusivity in education and workplaces.

What We Learned

📌 How machine learning can enhance accessibility through gesture recognition and NLP.
📌 The importance of human-centered design when building assistive technology.
📌 How to optimize AI models for real-time use while maintaining accuracy and speed.
📌 The challenges of making technology truly inclusive and how to solve them.

What’s Next for Kathanam?

✔️ Expanding to more sign languages like BSL, LSF, and global sign languages.
✔️ Enhancing gesture recognition AI for real-time sign detection via webcams.
✔️ Integrating speech-to-sign AI to enable voice-to-sign language conversion.
✔️ Building a community-driven accessibility hub for continuous learning and support.

We used GitHub Copilot in VS Code to streamline development, from writing AI models for gesture recognition to integrating Azure services like Speech-to-Text and Translator APIs. Copilot helped with code autocompletion, debugging, and API integration, making our workflow faster and more efficient. It also assisted in implementing Azure Functions for real-time processing and Azure Blob Storage for managing user data. Overall, it played a key role in enhancing our development speed and accuracy.

Code Autocompletion & AI Model Development – Assisted in writing gesture recognition and speech processing functions efficiently.

Azure API Integration – Helped in implementing Speech-to-Text, Translator API, and Text-to-Speech services seamlessly.

Debugging & Optimization – Provided real-time fixes, suggestions, and performance improvements for AI and backend scripts.

Azure Functions & Storage – Assisted in writing serverless functions for real-time processing and managing data in Azure Blob Storage.

Documentation & Clean Code – Generated structured docstrings and formatted code for better readability.

💡 Kathanam is more than a project – it’s a movement towards an inclusive future.
