Inspiration

Reddit is a beautiful mess—a chaotic symphony of cats, drama, stocks, and debates. We thought, “What if these subreddits could actually fight?” Enter Karma Kombat: a pixel-art Reddit fighting game where subreddit personas battle using meme-fueled attacks. Think Smash Bros., but your fighters are r/AITA, r/Cats, r/WallStreetBets, and their weapons are emotional manipulation, YOLO trades, and karma bombs.

What it does

  • Choose your subreddit fighter.
  • Use attacks like “YOLO Slam,” “Mod Hammer,” or “Massive Upvote Bomb.”
  • Real Reddit posts are pulled live as taunts.
  • Karma = strength. More karma, more chaos.
  • Viewers vote live to decide finishing moves.
  • A weird, glorious celebration of Reddit culture.

How we built it

🎯 Built in Bolt.new, using multiple prompts for game logic, assets, UI, and Reddit integration. 🔥 Frontend in React + TypeScript (Bolt stack). 🧠 Reddit API for fetching posts and karma data. 🚀 Deployed via Netlify. ❗Note: This is not the One-Shot project. This version was expanded post-prompt per the Reddit x Bolt challenge rules. ⚠️ Challenge Notes This version was built with multiple Bolt prompts. Originally ideated from a One-Shot version, not submitting the one-shot version project, but this build includes full integration, logic fixes, and custom mechanics, per community encouragement.

Challenges we ran into

  • Making live Reddit content playable (and hilarious).
  • Mapping karma into real-time fighter stats.
  • Working around Reddit’s rate limits.
  • Deploying with Devvit: failed due to reddit-app issues.
