Inspiration

The main inspiration behind Karma is the idea of local action. By making the voices and experiences of individuals the central focus of the app, the power and influence that each individual has on their overall community is maintained.

The main impetus, besides apps such as YikTak, Discord and Nextdoor is the sociological research framework of participatory action research: “an approach to action research emphasizing participation and action by members of communities affected by that research.” Combining these ideas and approaches, we try to make community underStanding a collaborative and self-directed project.

What it does

Karma allows users to treat the world like a giant shared piece of collaborative art. The app pings users randomly to ask how they’re feeling, eg about themselves or their environment. This information is gathered and anonymized, and colors the entire landscape. In real-time, users see how their experiences affect the vibe of their world.

In addition to prompts on their feelings, users can leave ephemeral messages wherever they are, which show up only for people near that area. This data is then analyzed for further understanding of the individual and group experience in an area.

How we built it

Karma is built with React, PubNub, GPT-4 and Google Maps.
