🎯 Inspiration

We were inspired by the endless moral dilemmas on Reddit’s r/AmITheAsshole and how Redditors passionately judge strangers like it's their full-time job. What if we turned that chaotic energy into a swipe-based courtroom game? Karma Courtroom blends the dopamine hit of Tinder, the judgmental joy of Reddit, and the absurdity Gen Z thrives on.

🧑‍⚖️ What it does

Karma Courtroom is a swipe-to-judge game where users read real AITA posts and pass judgment:

  • Swipe right if the person is Not the Asshole
  • Swipe left if they Are the Asshole After each swipe, users see how their judgment compares to Reddit's top-voted comment.
  • Earn karma XP for matching Reddit
  • Rank up from "Internet Intern" to "Supreme Karma Judge"
  • Take on daily challenges like “Judge 5 pet drama posts”
  • Compete in the Leaderboards of Justice

🛠️ How we built it

We built the app using:

  • Bolt.dev for rapid front-end development and Reddit API integration
  • Reddit Developer Platform to fetch random/top posts from r/AmItheAsshole
  • Custom Bolt functions to pull post content and top comments
  • A lightweight XP system using Bolt Store / LocalStorage
  • Swipe mechanics inspired by Tinder UX using Bolt components
  • Verdict detection using regex on top comments (YTA, NTA, ESH, NAH)

😤 Challenges we ran into

  • Reddit API rate limits forced us to implement smart caching and batching
  • Parsing verdicts from comments was trickier than expected due to sarcastic or ironic replies
  • Designing a fun and intuitive swipe UX inside Bolt's layout constraints
  • Making it funny and stupid but still functional and repeatable

🏆 Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Built a fully functional Reddit-integrated game within the hackathon timeframe
  • Created a fun Karma XP system that’s actually addicting
  • Nailed the Gen Z tone and meme-friendly UI
  • Made people laugh and think (kind of)

📚 What we learned

  • Bolt.dev is insanely fast for building Reddit-native apps
  • Reddit’s comment threads are a goldmine for gamified content
  • Gen Z engagement = quick decisions + instant validation + chaotic humor
  • A little bit of stupid goes a long way when it’s executed well

🔮 What's next for Karma Courtroom

  • Add multiplayer judging mode (debate with friends!)
  • Integrate AI Lawyer Mode to auto-generate “courtroom arguments”
  • Enable sharing memes of your judgments
  • Add voice verdicts — say “YTA” like a real judge
  • Launch it as a full Reddit mini-game, integrated with profiles & karma badges
