Karigar Connect Inspiration
India has an extraordinary diversity of traditional crafts, from handloom weaving and block printing to embroidery, pottery, metalwork and many other regional traditions. However, exceptional craftsmanship does not automatically translate into access to global markets.
I wanted to explore how technology could help bridge this gap. An artisan may have decades of expertise but lack access to international buyers, designers and brands, or may not know how to present their work for a global audience.
This inspired Karigar Connect, an AI-powered platform designed to help Indian artisans present their work professionally, assess their global market readiness, discover relevant international opportunities and explore collaborations with designers and brands.
What it does
Karigar Connect supports an artisan through several stages of the global market-access journey.
AI Profile Builder
Artisans provide straightforward information about their craft, experience, materials, products and capabilities. AI transforms this information into a polished international-facing professional profile that can be used for portfolios, catalogues and business introductions.
Global Market Readiness
The platform evaluates factors such as product presentation, storytelling, pricing information, catalogue readiness, sustainability information, buyer communication and international shipping readiness.
Instead of simply generating an arbitrary AI score, the prototype uses defined scoring criteria to make the assessment more transparent and explainable. It also provides actionable recommendations for improving weaker areas.
Global Opportunities & Matching
Karigar Connect presents relevant international opportunities and calculates how closely each opportunity matches the artisan's profile.
Matching considers factors such as craft compatibility, materials, product category, sustainability practices, customisation capabilities and international readiness.
The platform also explains why an opportunity is considered a good match rather than presenting a percentage without context.
For the current prototype, sample opportunity data is used to demonstrate how this matching system could work.
Personalised Outreach
Once an artisan identifies a promising opportunity, Karigar Connect can generate a personalised professional pitch based on both the artisan's profile and the characteristics of the opportunity.
The artisan remains in control and can review or modify the communication before using it.
Designer Collaborations
Karigar Connect also explores relationships beyond conventional buyer-seller transactions. Designer collaboration briefs can connect artisans with designers and brands looking for particular craft techniques, materials or production capabilities.
The goal is to enable relationships such as artisan-to-designer, artisan-to-brand and artisan-to-global creative partner.
How I built it
I built Karigar Connect as a full-stack web prototype.
The frontend was developed using React and Vite, with a custom interface inspired by Indian visual traditions. The design combines generous white space and vibrant colours with motifs influenced by Indian folk and craft traditions.
The backend functionality uses JavaScript/Node.js, with API endpoints supporting profile generation, readiness assessment, opportunity matching and pitch generation.
The application includes an explainable rules-based scoring layer for market readiness and opportunity compatibility. Generative AI is used where natural-language generation adds value, particularly for professional profile creation, explanations and personalised outreach.
The project is deployed on Vercel, with serverless API functions allowing the frontend and backend functionality to operate through the same deployed application.
Challenges I faced
One of the main design challenges was deciding where AI genuinely added value and where conventional application logic was more appropriate. For example, allowing a language model to simply invent a "91% match" would make the recommendation difficult to justify. I therefore separated numerical scoring from natural-language generation, using structured criteria for scores and AI for explanations and communication.
Another challenge was designing an interface that reflected Indian craftsmanship without becoming visually overwhelming. Early versions contained too many decorative elements, with some artwork competing with the content. I progressively simplified the dashboard, increased whitespace and restricted decorative motifs to areas where they would not interfere with usability.
There were also technical challenges in moving from local development to deployment. The local application used a React/Vite frontend with an Express backend, while the deployed version needed API functionality compatible with Vercel's serverless environment. I adapted the API architecture so the production application could use same-origin /api endpoints.
What I learned
Building Karigar Connect reinforced the importance of treating AI as one component of a larger product rather than making every feature AI-driven.
I learned how structured scoring can be combined with generative AI to produce systems that are both useful and more explainable. I also gained experience integrating frontend and backend functionality, designing reusable React components, working with API-based AI functionality and adapting a local full-stack application for serverless deployment.
The project also taught me how much product design depends on iteration. Features that initially appeared useful—such as separating opportunity discovery and opportunity matching into different sections—became redundant once I saw the complete user journey. Combining them produced a simpler and more intuitive experience.
What's next
The current version is a hackathon prototype demonstrating the core concept. Future development could incorporate verified live opportunity sources, multilingual artisan onboarding, richer product catalogues, collaboration management, secure messaging and tools for international logistics and export readiness.
A more advanced matching system could also learn from successful artisan-brand collaborations while maintaining transparency around why opportunities are recommended.
Ultimately, the vision behind Karigar Connect is simple:
Karigar Connect isn't trying to change the craft. It's trying to change who the craft can reach.
